As we approach winter here in South Africa, we felt like sharing some winter wedding ideas for the season. Winter weddings have become popular for many reasons. They are often more affordable as suppliers offer winter specials or discounted rates. Rain on your wedding day is good luck, plus the photo’s are beautiful. There is something very romantic about being surrounded by fireplaces, candles and red wine. Winter gives us all a great excuse to eat yummy treats, like roasting marshmellows and chocolates bars. Here are some ideas to take into consideration if choosing a winter wedding.
A Winter Wedding Dress
You do not have to choose a long sleeved dress if getting married in winter. You can use fur coats, knitwear or pashminas to keep you warm. We do, however feel long sleeves for a wedding dress can look beautiful. Dress designers are coming up with amazing creations for winter!
Wedding favours for Guests
If its cold outside, then keeping your guests warm is essential. Buy blankets or scarfs for guests to use throughout the wedding. These can also double up as a wedding favour. Gloves are another cute idea for wedding favours. Toffee apples or bags of marshmellows are another fun way to keep guests happy. Mugs are great as gifts which can be placed on the bar to be used or taken home.
Winter Drinks
Offering guests warm drinks throughout the wedding is key. Some ideas would be red wine, hot chocolate bar, gluehwein in mugs, coffee served by a barista, tea tasting or whiskey bar. This will warm everyone up and keep them cozy.
Winter Food Ideas
Apart from the usual of serving soup in cups, there can be toasted sandwiches, hot chips & dips, doughnuts, chocolate fountains, warm stone fruits and malva pudding. Remember guests will eat more if its cold, so keep the food coming throughout the night. Even serving hot pizza straight out of a pizza oven would be delicious. “good food, good life”
Winter Colours & Flowers
Use flowers that are in season, this will mean they will last a lot longer and be more affordable. Using pine trees or greenery is a great winter look. We also love warm reds, burgundy, plum, olive and creams. Elegant greens such as emerald also work well. Another look is using lots of wooden textures. Gold or rose gold is great to add to the above colours to make them pop. Becareful if using blues, silver & greys as it can be a cold look, use them wisely and it creates magic.
Winter Deco & Lighting
Using lots of candles is a perfect idea for winter, it not only gives the venue a romantic glow but heats up the room naturally. Using lighting effects can create a magical feel, fairy lights, naked bulbs, wall lights are all stunning to create warmth. A quick tip, fill glass jars with battery operated fairy lights and place these on the tables amongst greenery to add that sparkle. Use fire knockers or lanterns outside for more atmosphere.
Winter Wedding Cakes
Be different and use doughnuts as the cake. You can also try pies – pecan, apple or cherry. Using winter fruits and pastries can change the feeling of the wedding. The more traditional winter cake would be naked cakes or using white icing. Decorate them with pine cones, ferns or berries.
