LOVE in the time of lockdown

Is lockdown making you doubt the proposal idea you originally had planned? Were you planning on popping the question before lockdown? Did lockdown ruin your proposal plans? As we all go through life in lockdown, we need to adapt with this new situation we are facing. This may mean popping the question in the comfort of your own home. Best to stay safe and abide by the rules, but this does mean limited proposal plans. The Perfect Proposal is here to assist as best we can!

Pre-proposal planning

Thinking of popping the question? Well you and your partner need to chat about your future before any plans get put in place. Some of our clients have felt that this time together has truly made them realise that their partner is the one. Some questions to ponder during this downtime can be:

• Are you both on the same page in your relationship journey?
• Do you want the same things in life?
• Has this lockdown actually been enjoyable spending it with your partner?

This alone time together is a perfect time to chat about future plans and how you are both feeling. Share the love and have long chats to ensure you get a YES!

Engagement rings

There are a few smaller jewellers that are operating during lockdown. There might be a slight delay in sourcing the exact ring but you will find it. We love the fact that you would be supporting smaller business in the time of need. Many jewellers would have rings already made up that could be purchased to save some time. We are still waiting for clarification whether these rings can be delivered during Level 4 but we will keep you updated every step of the way.

Family matters

We know it is important to chat to the partner’s family (or one member) for permission before asking the question, “will you marry me?”. To get their blessing will help calm your nerves and increase the excitement. While not asking the family in person for their permission may not be what you have always envisioned, a Zoom call with them may allow you to get your nerves under control and to write down what you would like to say. Some of our clients say that asking the dad is more nerve-wracking than asking their partner 😊If the engagement does take place at home under these circumstances, be sure to pre-arrange a video call to celebrate with the whole family after the proposal happens. Your partner will be so happy to see their smiling faces and reactions.

Proposal planning

We are very sorry if your proposal got ruined or delayed by lockdown or Covid 19. We feel the world would love some good news and an engagement might be the right medicine. If there is any way of replicating your idea and adapting it to your home, then we say GO AHEAD! For example; wake your partner up early for a safari theme game drive or set up a romantic dinner under the stars.

Be creative, we dare you

We all need to be creative and think outside the box during this time. You might find supplies are limited, especially here in South Africa, but try your best to give your special fiancé-to-be the BEST. If you can’t buy champagne, then use sparkling juice. If you can’t find flowers, use fake ones. If you don’t have the ring, then buy ring sweets from Woolworths to use for now. Your partner will understand and we feel it will all add up to a pretty great proposal story!

On the 6^th July 2019, Nick asked Sandy-Lee to marry him and she said YES! Nick and Sandy have been dating for two and a half years and Nick knew her so well that he planned a super romantic treasure hunt for her that morning! She would go on the treasure hunt with her sister and soon to be sister-in-law and they would eventually find Nick and our set up 😊

The morning started with Sandy being handed her first clue and a beautiful single red rose. The clue took her a foot massage with the sisters. Then the next clue took her to breakfast and then on to a secret destination that meant something to the two of them. Then it was off to their first date spot for margaritas before they jumped in the car to arrive at The Residence Boutique Hotel. Nick and Sandy had not spoken the whole day and Nick was anxiously pacing up and down waiting for Sandy to arrive!

We had set up the private Boat Lounge room at the hotel with a romantic table for four, a canvas with a picture of the two of them, Marry Me sign, a trail of rose petals and bouquets of her favourite flowers and our lovely violinist, Kristel of Cherry Pill. Nick had requested a list of romantic songs for Kristel to play but specifically for Train’s Marry Me to play during the proposal.

We collected Sandy and her sisters from the car park and led them to the Boat Lounge. She was so nervous walking in and instantly broke into a smile when she saw him. It was so romantic, and the sisters got to witness the whole thing with not a dry eye in the house. They then all enjoyed a lovely lunch to celebrate!

Small things to remember about proposing

If anyone understands just how stressful this moment in your life is, it’s us at The Perfect Proposal. You can forget about some small details that can really make your proposal just a little bit more incredible.

First of all, remember to speak to your girlfriend about marriage way in advance of proposing. You need to make sure that you two are on the same page when it comes to marriage and ensures you two have spoken about the future and that you both have the same plans in mind.

Take your girlfriends father, mother or her closest relative out for dinner or drinks and ask for their permission to propose. Going the little extra mile of asking them while taking them out just shows a lot more interest and enthusiasm from your side. It will get them so excited about the proposal!

If you do not know her ring size then ask her best friend to take her to a ring store. The best friend can say she wants to get one made for herself and can easily trick your girlfriend into getting her ring size for fun. Ensure you ask someone who is good at acting and won’t make it obvious. It’s also a good way for her to see what her best friends likes when it comes to ring style.

Try your best to get your girlfriend’s nails done. If she goes on the regular then line the proposal day up close to her nail appointment otherwise ask a close relative or friend to take her for a manicure and pay for them. You could also host a fake competition so that she thinks she won a voucher for her nails. Get creative!

If your girlfriend loves photos then do not forget to hire a photographer so that the special moment can get caught on camera. Most girls love it when you think of this detail as they really appreciate the small things.

You also need to make sure the proposal suits her personality and what she likes. If she hates hiking then do not propose after a hike. If she loves dressing up then ensure she is all glammed up for the special moment. Overall you want this to be the best day of her life so far and you should know her best.

Never forget the small things to remember about proposing like the bubbles, flowers and chocolates to just make the proposal perfect!
